The History of Orangeburg Security Systems

Orangeburg Security Systems Inc. was incorporated in April of 1998; however our history of providing electronic security solutions in and around Orangeburg began in the early 70’s!

In the beginning George A. Ball started selling a non-electric type of fire alarm as an after hour supplement to his day job in a local factory. In just a short time his part time job became his full time life occupation! George opened Home Safety Co. and began installing electronic fire and burglary alarm systems in 1971. The company grew quickly and in a few years became one of the larger locally owned electronic security companies in South Carolina, with a half a dozen offices around the state. The company was heavy on custom designed systems and prompt service. Mr. Ball always concerned with the professionalism in our company as well as the entire industry, helped start the South Carolina Alarm Association and continued to be involved until his death in 2007.

In 1987 George sold his company to, and kept a position with National Guardian Security. National Guardian one of the largest security companies in the country that grew by acquiring well established locally owned companies like George’s. Our operation stayed essentially the same as it had always been and our reputation as a reliable provider of electronic security solutions grew.

In 1996 National Guardian, (a publicly owned company) was purchased by a phone company out of Chicago and re-named Securitylink From Ameritech moving towards a business plan of heavy marketing, less custom sales and installation and an absence of a personal presence in smaller markets.

Due to these changes and others that took us away from the type of business we felt strongly "got us where we were" George and 4 other former employees of National Guardian, (see owners biography), left Securitylink.

In 1998 we opened the office at 762 Broughton St., Orangeburg where Home Safety had originally begun and began Orangeburg Security Systems. Since then we have returned to our former prominence as our area’s number one security product provider. We have won the Times and Democrat’s Best of the Best seven out of the last ten years, and have added thousands of new customers.

Early after we opened, in an effort to offer the best product available, we chose First Alert as our major equipment brand. First Alert is manufactured by Honeywell Corporation which is the largest maker of security products in our industry providing state of the art technology and proven reliability.

From industrial fire and closed circuit camera systems to home fire and security systems we are glad to be available to our community as an experienced local life safety provider!
